Meeting Minutes of September 9, 2021

Call to Order: Grand Knight, Jim Easterday called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.

Wardens Report: The meeting was held in the Holy Spirit Catholic Church’s Martha and Mary room. The meeting was preceded by “Men’s Knight Out.”

Prayer and Pledge of Allegiance: The Grand Knight led the Council in prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance.

Roll Call: Officers absent at the meeting were the Advocate, 2nd Year Trustee, and 3rd Year Trustee. Twenty-seven (27) members were present and duly recognized.

Attendance: Present: 27; Total Membership: 319

Approval of Minutes: Upon motion duly made and seconded, the minutes from the August 12, 2021, meeting was approved.

 

Grand Knight’s Report

Grand Knight, Jim Easterday gave the following report:

 

1.The brunch of August 29 was successful with 53 in attendance. He thanked John Weber for pulling it together. The next Communion Mass and Breakfast will be October 31;

2.The Council webpage is up and running with the current calendar of events having been posted thanks to Bob Long and Eric Schroeder.

3.The Fun Fair scheduled for September 10 was postponed until May 2022, and a parish night of prayer has been substituted for the event. Those who volunteered for helping at the Fun Fair event will be asked again in May;

4.The 2021-2022 Fraternal calendar and directory is available thanks to Tom Gaume. Please pick up a copy before leaving, and notify me if there are any corrections required to the calendar and directory;

5.Play Along Football will be complete after this weekend and many thanks to Ken O’Bryan and those helping with the fundraiser;

6.A thank you was extended to Chris Horvat and for bringing the refreshments this evening; and

7.The Council is still looking for a volunteer to head-up the Lenten Dinner Committee. Anyone interested please contact me.

 

 

Deputy Grand Knight

The Deputy Grand Knight, Don Watson, had no report.

 

Chaplain’s Report

Fr. Andrew was excused and had no report for the Council.

 

Financial Reports

Financial Secretary Report

Tom Gaume the Financial Secretary was absent. Tom Spencer, the Treasury, presented the bills of the Council. They were:

1.Food for the Council’s meeting (Chris Horvat brought)    $104.46

2.Sporting Knight (Chad Eickholt)          $149.02

3.Postage, Badges, Directory Printing, & Kiosk (Tom Gaume)  $365.18

4.Flowers for Ron Svec, Jr. & Communion Breakfast ( John

Weber)                  $112.48

5.Lockton Affinity, LLC (Officers & Directors Insurance)    $125.00

 

Upon motion duly made and seconded it was approved to pay the above referenced bills.

Also, he reported the Council received a $875 from hole sponsors for the upcoming Golf Outing and the receipts from the Communion breakfast.

 

Treasurer’s Reports

Tom Spencer, the Treasurer, was present and gave the Treasurer’s report as follows:

Bank Balance on hand (As of September 9, 2021):        $18,540.25

  Less: Checks Outstanding (Kansans for Life)       $ 2,370.57

Less: earmarked Coats for Kids’ fund         $ 2,290.65

Less: earmarked Donations for Seminarians fund $ 4,007.00

Remainder :           $ 9,872.03

 

 

Lector’s Address

The Lector, Greg Brown, gave his presentation on the on-going theme of St. Joseph since this is the year of St. Joseph. After his presentation, he took questions and comments from the floor.

 

Membership Director

  The Grand Knight called on the Membership Director to give his report. Chad Eickholt, the Membership Director, was present. He said the next “Sporting Knights” event would be October 4 at Mr. P’z, “Monday Night Football.”

He said 15 men were present at the one in August. Finally, he said he hopes to have a recruiting event in December.

 

 

Faith Director

 

  Everett Fritz as Faith Director was called upon to give his report. He had no report.

 

Family Director

 

  John Weber as Family Director was called upon to give his report. John expounded on the summary given by the Grand Knight regarding the September Communion breakfast and said the next one would be October 31.

 

  Also, John updated the Council regarding his discussion with Father regarding the family spiritual programs offered under “Faith in Action” to the Parish. He informed the Council he will provide further information as it develops.

 

 

Life Director

 

Dave Boone was present and gave his report. He announced the final number collected in total for the “Baby Bottle” fundraiser was $6,319.23.

 

Secondly, Dave announced October 7, 2021, a Thursday, would be our day in the participation for “40 Days for Life”. He said we will be looking for Knights and others to fill the hours between 7 A.M and 4 P.M. Contact him should you wish to participate.

 

 

YOUTH DIRECTOR

 

Don Watson was present and called upon to give the Youth Director report. Don said the basketball “Free Throw Contest” will be held this year on October 10, the 16, and the 22nd. Help is needed and anyone wishing to volunteer should contact him.

 

 

Community Director

Mike Bergkamp, the Community Director was present; he had nothing to report.

 

WEBMASTER REPORT

 

Bob Long was not present; there was no report.

 

 

Unfinished Business

  With the Director reports concluded the Grand Knight asked whether there was any unfinished business.

 

  Ken O’Bryan was not present to give an update on “Play Along Football.” The Grand Knight gave the report. He reported a total of 768 tickets were sold. He informed the Council this was an increase of over 150 tickets sold from last year

 

  After the Grand Knight gave the wrap-up report on “Play Along Football,” Phil Fowler stood and was recognized. Phil reminded the Council the “Toostie Roll Drive” would be held October 8, 9, and 10. He passed around a sheet for sign-ups.

 

  Greg Miller stood and was recognized. Gregg informed the Council the next Catholic Charities Drive would be October 2nd and 3rd. He reminded the Council this was a Parish activity, but it was coordinated by the Knights. He said help would be required after each Mass to collect food.

 

  Also, Greg reported he had nothing to report on the cost of placemats. This matter was tabled until information was available regarding the cost of having Knight placemats for events.

 

  Next, Greg Brown, stood and was recognized. He informed the Council he had nothing to report on the “Tom Maillard Memorial.” The subject was tabled until further information was available.

 

  Finally, Everett Fritz was called upon to give an update on the Golf Outing in Greg Davis’ absent. Everett informed the Council he had obtained money from seven (7) sponsors for the upcoming Golf Outing and he had at least three other commitments from individuals who expressed interest in being sponsors. Everett reported Greg Davis was handling the sign up portion for the event and he understood green fee cost were $40 a person and women were allowed to participate in the event. After the meeting, Greg Davis reported that the cost is really $45.

 

     

New Business

  With “Unfinished Business” concluded, the Grand Knight asked whether anyone had any new business to bring up with the Council.

 

  Greg Brown stood and was recognized. Greg informed the Council the “Coats for Kid” fundraiser would take place in October. He said currently he does not have a definite date for it.

 

  Next, the Grand Knight reported the Council was asked by the Church to clean up after the Gala which would be held in November. He indicated the Scouts would be helping too, but the Knights were asked to initially clear some items from the premises before the youth helped.

 

  Next, Chad Eickholt stood and was recognized. Chad informed the Council of the fundraiser for Down Syndrome at Arrowhead Stadium on October 16. He indicated he was not asking the Council for a donation for the event, but he wanted everyone to be aware and asked for their support for this worthwhile cause. He mentioned a couple of Holy Spirit Parishioners with Down Syndrome children.

 

  Finally, Rick Trudell stood and was recognized. Rick had been in charge of promoting the sale of Religious Fundraiser ticket during the evening. The tickets sell at $100 apiece. A motion was duly made and seconded the Council purchase one (1) ticket for $100. The motion passed.

 

Fourth Degree Report

 

Dan Hageman, the Faithful Navigator was present. Dan reminded everyone of the upcoming September 20, 4th Degree meeting proceeded by a pot luck dinner. He said the meeting would start at 7:15 P.M, and the dinner at 6:15 P.M.

 

Also, Dan informed the Council the Chalice Dinner would be October 2. He said members would go to 4:00 P.M. Mass together and Mass would be followed by dinner and the event.

 

Finally, he mentioned for anyone interested there would be a 4th Degree Exemplification in Wichita on October 16 and in Atchison on November 20. Anyone interested in participating in the Exemplification should contact him.

 

 

KNIGHT AND FAMILY OF THE MONTH

 

The Grand Knight reported the Knight and Family were as follows:

Family of the Month:   Greg and Cheryl Miller

 

 

District Deputy Comments

 

The District Deputy, Richard Warwick, was reported to have recovered from his illness and back to fulfilling his duties. However, he had a conflict for this evening and could not attend.

Our Field Agent, John Rodriguez was not present and there was no report.

For the Good of the Order

 

Prayers Requested

 

  Before closing the meeting the Grand Knight asked whether any Brother Knight wished to request prayers for the sick and distressed. The names for which prayers were requested were:

1.Sir Ray Mersman died; he was a 4th Degree Knight;

2.Barbara Hageman is having back issues and Dan asked she be prayed for; and

3.Sandy Fritz is undergoing surgery September 20, and Everett asked for prayers for her.

 

 

Adoration

 

Jerry Gerstberger was present. He said the Adoration Chapel was open and there were seven (7) Knights who attended last Wednesday and five (5) last Friday. He said there was space for eighteen (18).

 

 

 

50 / 50 DRAWING

 

There was a 50/50 drawing at the meeting. Brian Wagner won $16.

 

After a prayer, the meeting closed at 8:05 P.M.
